Protect Marriage Maine says more dumb things.

by Michael Day

Protect Marriage Maine has been promoting some of their Youtube videos in an effort to convince voters that there will be “consequences” should same-sex marriage be approved in Maine. But are any of these things either direct or indirect consequences of allowing gays and lesbians to enjoy the legal benefits of civil marriage?

If Damien Goddard could be fired in Maine under similar circumstances once same-sex marriage is approved, he could be fired in Maine under similar circumstances now.

If Jim and Mary O’Reilly could be sued in Maine under similar circumstances once same-sex marriage is approved, they could be sued in Maine under similar circumstances now.

If “they” could try to get Don Mendell fired once same-sex marriage is approved in Maine, “they” could try to get him fired now…which is exactly what he’s saying “they” did.

This has nothing to do with “redefining” marriage”, and I know the people writing these ads aren’t stupid enough to think it does. That’s a 100% empty buzzword that just plays well with focus groups, as I’ve discussed before. This is true no matter how many times they repeat it, and no matter how many lesbian couples they hire to lay in the leaves an play with each others chins on camera.

Kids aren’t going to be “indoctrinated” into the belief that same-sex marriage is moral. It’s telling that these people are still citing two isolated incidents that are almost seven years old. Politifact did a good debunking of this last year.

Bottom line: these so-called consequences have nothing at all to do with legalizing same-sex civil marriage in Maine. I posted these same points on the PMM facebook page in response to these videos, and their response was:

Hundreds of thousands of dollars and they can’t even hire an effective liar.
